Maybe Grand Forks, North Dakota should be renamed Hockeytown, USA?
More than a few cities may claim to that name, but none of them have just elected a former NHL player as mayor.
Brandon Bochenski, who played five seasons in the NHL after starring at the University of North Dakota, won the city-wide vote on Tuesday. He defeated incumbent Mike Brown, who held the office for five terms, among others.
"It feels great," Bochenski told the Grand Forks Herald. "We set out a goal and we accomplished it. Any time you can do that, it's amazing."
Bochenski played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators, Anaheim Ducks and Nashville Predators during his NHL career.
Grand Forks has a population 56,948.
"When you put five months of work in, you've got to be excited about this result," Bochenski told the Herald. "I just think the town was ready for a change, and that's the biggest attribute that we brought to it, was the change and the change for the better."
