ATLANTA - Bobby Holik will captain the Atlanta Thrashers this season.
Holik, entering his 17th NHL season, succeeds Scott Mellanby, who retired. Thrashers coach Bob Hartley also picked four assistant captains: Slava Kozlov, Marian Hossa, Niclas Havelid and Ilya Kovalchuk.
"It's an honour," Holik said Tuesday night. "I don't believe it will change me. At times I may be more politically correct."
Hartley said Holik's experience as a winner on two Stanley Cup teams with New Jersey will be valuable to an Atlanta team trying to defend its first Southeast Division title.
"He's one guy who can handle being a captain and at the same time bring the same game," Hartley said. "Sometimes the C can get pretty heavy."
