The St. Louis Blues have released defenseman Ryan Whitney from his professional tryout, general manager Doug Armstrong announced on Friday. Whitney had been participating in training camp since Sept. 12.

Selected with the fifth pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2002 NHL Draft, Whitney has 50 goals and 259 points in 474 career games. He completed a six-year, $24 million contract last season with the Edmonton Oilers and had 13 points with a minus-7 rating in 34 games.

The move trimmed the Blues' roster to 24 players.
