COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed centre Derick Brassard to a four-year contract extension.

The 22-year-old native of Hull, Que., scored 10 goals and added 15 assists in 31 games last season before a dislocated shoulder in December benched him for the remainder of the year.

"We are pleased to have Derick under contract for the next five years," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said in a statement Friday.

"Derick's determination, passion and talent make us believe he will be an important part of our team in the coming years."

Brassard, in the final year of his three-year rookie contract, is due to make US$765,000 next season.

Brassard went sixth overall in the 2006 NHL draft as the Blue Jackets' top pick. At the time of his injury, Brassard led all NHL rookies in points and was rookie of the month in October.
