It's that time of year when classrooms are filling up and buses are rambling down local roadways.
The school year is getting under way this week for many area districts, and the Blue Jackets have plenty of opportunities for local educators and students to pair their educational pursuits with hockey-themed programs.
The CBJ's Hockey in the Classroom initiatives saw more 60,000 central Ohio area students participate during the 2018-19 school year. From reading challenges to physical education programs, the organization offers plenty of avenues to connect their students with the sport of hockey to reach their goals.

The programs are detailed below, and those who wish to take part can visit BlueJackets.com/education for more information.
Book Jackets presented by Ohio's 529 Plan
The Book Jackets program presented by Ohio's 529 Plan is a reading incentive program that uses the excitement of the Columbus Blue Jackets to encourage students in grades K-8 to spend more time reading.
The program is easy to implement and helps your students become All-Star Readers by providing great Blue Jackets incentives to reach reading goals. Book Jackets can be run over a four-week period from August 2019 through April 2020.

Blue Jackets Power Play Challenge
presented by PNC
The Blue Jackets Power Play Challenge is a free, hockey-themed wellness curriculum to assist elementary school physical education teachers in the fight against childhood obesity. The goal is to make a healthy lifestyle both enjoyable and easy for kids to maintain.
The Challenge is designed to meet Ohio state standards for physical education curriculum for grades 2-5 and aims to keep children active while encouraging healthy choices.
Students will be given five fitness-related challenges to complete individually and the class/grade will receive an introduction to street hockey. Each student who completes all five challenges over the course of the school year will receive a special ticket offer to a Blue Jackets game.
Student Achievers, powered by AEP
We believe in motivation, hard work and reward. Through our Student Achievers program, powered by AEP, we offer up to two free game tickets for students who earn straight A's or those who improved a full letter grade in a subject in a grading period.
Hockey Scholars
The Future Goals - Hockey Scholarâ„¢ online course is a unique tool that leverages the exciting game of hockey to teach science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts to students in grades 4-8. This course, aligned to state science and math standards, also introduces students to STEM careers in hockey.
Avondale Adopt-A-School Program
The Blue Jackets have created a lasting relationship with Avondale Elementary, a school in one of the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods, to make a powerful difference in the lives of their students. With visits, games, fundraisers and even a pen pal program, we let the students know they are important.
