Bliznak nets two goals as Giants beat Cougars 4-1 in WHL action @NHLdotcom

VANCOUVER - Mario Bliznak scored two goals as the Vancouver Giants defeated the Prince George Cougars 4-1 in WHL action Friday night.

Evander Kane and Gary Nunn also scored for Vancouver as the Giants (38-13-2-5) won for the sixth time in their past eight games, before a crowd of 12,235 at the Pacific Coliseum.

Justin Maylan, on a power play, tallied for Prince George (15-39-1-3) as the Cougars suffered their seventh straight loss.

It was Vancouver's third victory in five meetings with Prince George this season. The Giants outshot the Cougars by a whopping 48-25 margin while scoring on one of three power-play attempts, but Prince George goaltender Real Cyr thwarted them on several occasions.

Kraymer Barnstable picked up the victory in goal for Vancouver.

Kane put the Giants ahead 1-0 at 7:57 into the first period. Left alone in the slot, he fired in Casey Pierro-Zabotel's pass from behind the net.

The Giants were unlucky not to score more, because they outshot the Cougars 21-11 in the opening frame.

Bliznak gave Vancouver a 2-0 lead on a fluke goal at 4:12 of the second period. His pass from the corner hit Prince George defenceman Patrik Magnusson and squeezed through goaltender Cyr.

Maylan's power play goal at 8:04 cut Prince George's deficit in half. But Bliznak counted his second goal of the night one minute and 15 seconds later as he deflected in Spencer Machacek's slapshot as the Vancouver captain, usually a winger, was playing the point on a power play, giving the Giants a tentative 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Nunn's insurance goal at 7:51 of the third period secured the victory.
