Blades score five in the first period as Saskatoon thumps Red Deer 8-1 @NHLdotcom

SASKATOON - Saskatoon scored five times in the first period Wednesday as the Blades thumped the Red Deer Rebels 8-1 in Western Hockey League play.

Josh Nicholls scored twice for Saskatoon (40-13-6), while Derek Hulak, Randy McNaught, Marek Viedensky, Tyler Kizuik, Gaelan Patterson and Stefan Elliott had the other goals. Hulak and Viedensky each added two assists.

Andrej Kudrna had the only goal for Red Deer (34-22-4).

Steven Stanford made 19 saves for the win.

Darcy Kuemper allowed four goals on 11 shots in the first before being replaced by Kraymer Barnstable.

Barnstable finished with eight saves on 12 shots.
