Beach leads the way as Spokane Chiefs edge Portland Winterhawks 5-4 @NHLdotcom

PORTLAND, Ore. - Kyle Beach scored twice, the second with 1:28 left in the game, to lead the Spokane Chiefs over the Portland Winterhawks 5-4 in Western Hockey League playoff action Saturday night.

Spokane also got goals from Steve Kuhn, Stefan Ulmer, and Tyler Johnson.

Beach scored on the power play early in the second period as the Chiefs went 2-for-4 with the man advantage. Ulmer's marker was also on the power play.

Taylor Aronson had a power-play goal to put Portland up 2-0 half way through the first period. Stefan Schneider, Brad Ross and Luca Sbisa also tallied.

Ryan Johansen and Nino Niederreiter both had three assists.

Chiefs goalie James Reid made 27 saves, while Mac Carruth stopped 20 shots.

Spokane leads the series 1-0. Game 2 will be in Portland Sunday night.
