Bartek scores a pair as Brandon opens WHL season with 5-1 win over Saskatoon @NHLdotcom

BRANDON, Man. - Daniel Bartek scored twice as the Brandon Wheat Kings topped the Saskatoon Blades 5-1 Friday night in the Western Hockey League season-opener for both clubs.

Bartek, a left-winger from the Czech Republic, scored both of his goals and added an assist in Brandon's four-goal second period.

Daryl Boyle, Matt Lowry and rookie Scott Glennie, with his first WHL goal, also scored for the Wheat Kings.

Walker Wintoneak and Chris Durand scored two late goals for the Blades, who host the Wheat Kings Saturday night to complete the home-and-home series.

Brandon netminder Joe Caligiuri made 17 saves, while Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots for Saskatoon.

The Blades played without centre Colton Gillies, still with the Minnesota Wild, who drafted him in the first round of the National Hockey League entry draft this year.
