Backstrom scores overtime winner as Capitals beat Hurricanes 3-2 @NHLdotcom

WASHINGTON - Mike Green's end-to-end rush set up Nicklas Backstrom's game-winning goal with 1:24 left in overtime to help the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Starting from behind his own net, Green skated the length of the ice and manoeuvred down the right side through the Hurricanes defence. He found a waiting Backstrom open in front and the highly touted rookie knocked the puck past Carolina goalie Michael Leighton.

Justin Williams scored 36 seconds into the third period and with just under 10 minutes remaining Erik Cole put a Rod Brind'Amour shot past Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig to tie the game at two. Brind'Amour finished with two assists.

Green opened the scoring for the Capitals early in the first period when he poked home a centring pass from Tomas Fleischmann.

It was Green's second goal of the pre-season after scoring two in 70 regular season games last year.

Viktor Kozlov, one of several free agents brought in to help the Capitals offensive attack, redirected a shot from Alexander Ovechkin to put the Capitals up 2-0. Tom Poti, another one of the free agents, also picked up an assist on the goal.
