Avs deal Cohen to Boston for Hunwick

by Adam Kimelman
The Colorado Avalanche, in desperate need of veteran help on defense, have traded 21-year-old defenseman Colby Cohen to the Boston Bruins for defenseman Matt Hunwick.

Cohen, a 2007 second-round pick, went scoreless in three games with the Avalanche earlier this month, his first NHL action. He's spent most of the season with the AHL Lake Erie Monsters, where he had 1 goal in 14 games. Cohen now will play for the Bruins' AHL team, the Providence Bruins.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Villanova, Pa., is in his first professional season after playing three seasons at Boston University. He helped the Terriers win the 2009 NCAA championship, and had 14 goals and 30 points in 36 games last season.

"When (Colorado GM Greg Sherman) called me and he's like, 'We just traded you,' I was praying," Cohen told the Bruins' website. "I had a few cities in mind ... and when he said Boston, I was like, 'Wow, this couldn’t be any better!'"

Hunwick, 25, had 3 points and a plus-4 rating in 22 games this season. He's averaging 16:12 per game in ice time, sixth among Bruins defensemen. He had back-to-back 6-goal seasons, but last season he had 14 points and a minus-16 rating in 76 games, after totaling 27 points and a plus-15 rating in 53 games in 2008-09.

"Matt is another young defenseman who can contribute to our lineup right away," said Sherman.

Injuries have forced the Avs to dress 11 different defensemen this season. They're currently without Kyle Cumiskey, out with a concussion, and team captain Adam Foote has missed the last two games with a leg injury that likely will keep him out of Tuesday's game against Atlanta.
