Avalanche Signs Justin Barron

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Justin Barron to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Barron, 19, served as captain of the Halifax Mooseheads this season, recording 31 points (8g/23a) in 33 games to lead all Halifax defensemen in goals, assists and points. He finished tied for eighth among league blueliners in points, tied for sixth in goals and tied for seventh in assists. Barron appeared in his first World Junior Championship in 2021, helping Canada to the silver medal. He finished with two assists and a +5 rating in seven contests in his first IIHF-sanctioned event.

Selected by the Avalanche in the first round (25th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft, Barron registered 19 points (4g/15a) in 34 games of the 2019-20 campaign before a diagnosed blood clot forced him to miss time. His 19 points still ranked first among Mooseheads defensemen at the end of the shortened season.
The Halifax, Nova Scotia, native has totaled 112 points (23g/89a) in 186 career regular-season QMJHL games, all with Halifax, and added 16 points (2g/14a) for the Mooseheads in 32 career postseason contests.
Barron registered a career-best 41 points (9g/32a) during the 2018-19 season and added 13 points (2g/11a) in 23 postseason outings as the Mooseheads fell to eventual President's Cup champion Rouyn-Noranda in six games. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound blueliner notched 21 points (2g/19a) in 51 games in his first season in 2017-18, earning a spot on the league's All-Rookie Team.
Internationally, Barron also represented his country at the 2018 Ivan Hlinka Gretzky Cup, tallying five assists in five games to help Canada capture the gold medal. He notched one point (0g/1a) in six games for Canada Red at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge to help his team earn silver.
