Nathan MacKinnon could play for the Colorado Avalanche at some point during a five-game road trip that starts Dec. 1, coach Jared Bednar said Sunday.

The forward, who was expected to be out three weeks after sustaining a lower-body injury during a 4-2 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 6, skated on his own for the first time since the injury Friday, when the Avalanche defeated the Seattle Kraken 7-3.
"He didn't skate [Saturday], he skated today, so we'll see how he progresses," Bednar said. "He'll be coming on the trip for sure."
MacKinnon's timeline to return means he'll at least miss Colorado's four games this week, starting at home against the Ottawa Senators on Monday (8:30 p.m. ET; SN1, ALT, RDS, ESPN+, NHL LIVE). The Avalanche (8-5-1), who have won four straight since MacKinnon was injured, also play the Anaheim Ducks at home Wednesday, at the Dallas Stars on Friday, and host the Nashville Predators on Nov. 27.
MacKinnon has scored 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in eight games, which at the time was tied for the Avalanche lead with forwards Gabriel Landeskog and Nazem Kadri. He missed the first two games of the season while in NHL COVID-19 protocol.
Defenseman Bowen Byram (concussion), forward Martin Kaut (upper body) and goalie Pavel Francouz (ankle) also skated before practice Sunday.
Francouz, who was injured during a preseason game Oct. 5, faced shots for the first time. He did not play last season while recovering from hip surgery.
"He's progressing, feeling much better," Bednar said.
Kaut, who has no points in six games this season, has been out since Nov. 3. Byram, who has scored eight points (three goals, five assists) in 11 games, has been out since Nov. 11. There is no timetable for either to return.
"[Byram] had a good day. He was on the ice working with [MacKinnon] doing a lot more movement stuff, tracking pucks and whatnot," Bednar said. "Both of those guys are making progress. [Kaut] had a good day, too."
