Makar scores goal of the year nominee with OT winner for Avalanche

Cale Makar just put in his bid for goal of the year.

The Colorado Avalanche defenseman spun away from Chicago Blackhawks forward Kirby Dach along the left wall, switched from forehand to backhand and shot top shelf at 2:38 of overtime to seal a 4-3 victory at United Center on Tuesday.
"It was a little bit lucky, to be honest," said Makar, who has scored 14 goals this season. "Dach] was kind of overcommitting for a cycle up top, and I just decided that I'd try and take it to the net. We had a decoy in the back, and that was kind of my first option to pass to. Once they took that away, I just tried to put it in short side and was just able to get it over Fleury. Excited just to get the win."
Makar's goal certainly got the attention of the folks at "SportsCenter" on ESPN, coming in as the top play of the night.
Makar joins an impressive list of candidates for best of goal of 2021-22 season; Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid had the first entry when he
[puck-handled his way through four New York Rangers and ripped twine
. There was also the
Michigan pass
from Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras to forward Sonny Milano, which sent the internet into a frenzy.

With the win, the Avalanche are 19-8-2 and the Blackhawks fell to 11-17-5, but they didn't dwell afterwards.
"[Makar] is an elite defenseman in this League, and that's not just the first time he's done something like that," Chicago coach Derek King said. "Tip your hat and move on."
"[Makar] is going to be a great player for a long time in this League," Blackhawks defenseman Calvin de Haan said. "It is what it is. He made a good play and it's going to be all over the NHL Network tomorrow, but we did a pretty good job overall against him and against [Colorado's] top players. Those guys are some of the best players in the world and they're going to get their chances. It's just about limiting them. It is what it is."
