Colorado enters the draft with picks in the first round (fourth overall), second (32nd), two choices in the fourth round (94th and 114th), as well as picks in the fifth (125th), sixth (156th) and seventh (187th) rounds. The Avs gained their extra fourth rounder (114th) from the New York Rangers at last year's draft in exchange for Nick Holden, while trading their third round choice to New Jersey for Eric Gelinas on Feb. 29, 2016.
The Avalanche will be selecting fourth overall for the first time since the franchise relocated from Quebec in 1995. The Nordiques selected fourth overall once (1992, Todd Warriner).
This year marks the fourth time that Colorado has had a top-five draft pick since arriving in Denver, as the club chose Nathan MacKinnon first overall in 2013, Gabriel Landeskog second overall in 2011 and Matt Duchene third overall in 2009. This would be the sixth time that the Avs have picked in the top 10, having previously selected MacKinnon, Landeskog, Duchene, Mikko Rantanen (10th in 2015) and Tyson Jost(10th in 2016).
The first round of the 2017 NHL Draft will take place on Friday, June 23, beginning at 5 p.m. MT (NBCSN). Rounds 2-7 will be held on Saturday, June 24, starting at 8 a.m. MT (NHL Network).
