Avalanche acquire defense prospect Gormley

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired defenseman Brandon Gormley from the Arizona Coyotes in a trade for the rights to restricted free agent defenseman Stefan Elliott.

Gormley was the No. 5 prospect in the Coyotes system, according to NHL.com.

Gormley, 23, played 27 games for the Coyotes last season and had two goals, two assists, 10 penalty minutes and 39 shots on goal. He was the No. 13 pick in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Elliot, 24, played five games for the Avalanche last season and one the season before after playing 57 the prior two seasons, including 39 in 2011-12. The 49th pick in the 2009 NHL Draft by Colorado has six goals and 12 assists in 63 NHL games.
