At the Rink: Panthers at Hurricanes

by Kurt Dusterberg

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Eddie Lack and Al Montoya will make their season debuts in goal when the Carolina Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers.

For Lack, the start will be his first with the Hurricanes after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in a June 27 trade.

"Obviously it's exciting, something I've been looking forward to since the trade," Lack said. "The play behind the net is a little different but we've been getting on the same page since training camp. So it feels good going into tonight."

The Hurricanes bring an 0-2-0 record into the game after a 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Carolina had 47 shots, including a 34-8 advantage after two periods, leaving the players searching for an explanation.

"I truly don't know how we didn't win the last game," forward Kris Versteeg said. "I've been a part of a lot of games in this League, and you see a lot of things happen. That was a game where you dominate the whole game and they find a way to win. It's just breakdowns here and there and things we can fix."

Hurricanes coach Bill Peters echoed those thoughts, but with an eye toward the offensive side of the game.

"There were a couple times we could have [shot] it instead of passed it, a couple on the power play where they were all in lanes and we were getting shots blocked," Peters said. "Maybe we can have a guy flair off to the side or we can go D-to-D and make the goaltender move east and west."

The Hurricanes will be without center Riley Nash, who injured his shoulder in the first period of the loss to the Red Wings. He is expected to miss two weeks.

The Panthers, who had an optional skate, are coming off a 1-0 road loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. That game completed a season-opening, home-and-home set that began with the Panthers' 7-1 win Saturday.
