At the Rink: Maple Leafs at Red Wings

by Staff
DETROIT -- Forward Johan Franzen will not play for the Detroit Red Wings against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday.

The Red Wings defeated the Maple Leafs 4-1 Friday. Franzen, who scored Detroit's first two goals, left the game late in the second period because of leg spasms.

Stephen Weiss will take Franzen's place in the lineup. Justin Abdelkader remains on the top line with Henrik Zetterberg, who had four assists Friday, and Gustav Nyquist, where Andelkader finished the game Friday.

Weiss, who has been a healthy scratch for the first four games, will play on the third line with Darren Helm and Andrej Nestrasil.

Nyquist and Abdelkader had a goal and an assist each Friday. That gives Nyquist a goal in each of Detroit's first four games.

Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said Toronto has to be better Saturday.

"I think our compete level has to go up more than a few degrees," he said. "The Wings had their way with us, especially in the small-ice areas. They won almost every puck battle in the small ice areas."

Maple Leafs left wing Brandon Kozun sustained what the team called a high ankle sprain when he was taken into the boards by Detroit defenseman Kyle Quincey. Kozun won't play Saturday and had a MRI on Saturday afternoon. Carlyle said the Maple Leafs had not gotten the results when he talked to the media before the game.

Matt Frattin will take Kozun's spot on the fourth line with Peter Holland and Richard Panik, and Holland will take Kozun's spot on the second penalty-killing unit.

Carlyle also said there could be changes on defense. Stephane Robidas was a healthy scratch Friday after Jake Gardiner was a healthy scratch the previous two games.

Backup goalie Jonas Gustavsson, a former Maple Leafs player, will make his first start of the season for the Red Wings.

Jimmy Howard came out of the game Friday with a sore groin and was placed on the 48-hour injured reserve list (for goaltenders only) but is expected to play Tuesday when Detroit plays at the Montreal Canadiens.

"Initially, we were concerned. But by the time we got back last night, we weren't as concerned," Babcock said.

Petr Mrazek was called up from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League to back up Gustavsson.
