At the Rink: Blue Jackets at Rangers

by Dan Rosen

NEW YORK -- Columbus Blue Jackets forward William Karlsson will make his season debut Saturday at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.

Karlsson will replace Alexander Wennberg in the lineup. Wennberg sustained a concussion in the first period of the Blue Jackets' 4-2 loss to the Rangers on Friday at Nationwide Arena.

Karlsson had two points in three games with the Blue Jackets last season after he was acquired in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks.

Columbus coach Todd Richards said Karlsson will go into Wennberg's spot as the third-line center between Scott Hartnell and Cam Atkinson. The other lines will remain the same.

"He's a very reliable two-way player, much like Alex," Richards said of Karlsson. "He has some offensive ability where he can make plays, shoot and score. But very reliable defensively. He can take up some [penalty kill] minutes for us."

The Rangers come home to play their first game of the season at MSG riding a two-game winning streak after a third-period comeback against the Blue Jackets on Friday.

Columbus had taken a 2-1 lead on forward Brandon Saad's power-play goal at 16:10 of the third, but with 2:36 remaining in the period, Rangers forwards Oscar Lindberg, Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello scored in a 1:17 span.

The Rangers also beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Wednesday.

"The great thing about athletics and sport is you get a chance to prove yourself every day, and tonight is another opportunity," Richards said. "We're playing against a really good hockey team. We saw that first-hand [Friday]. We need to be better."

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist will make his third straight start, in a span of four days, to begin the season. Lundqvist is off to a solid start to the season with the two wins, a 2.00 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.

Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky will get a chance for redemption against the Rangers. He allowed four goals on 25 shots Friday.
