Ashton's shootout goal propels Lethbridge to 4-3 win over Kootenay @NHLdotcom

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Carter Ashton scored in the third round of the shootout to lead Lethbridge past the Kootenay Ice 4-3 in the Hurricanes' WHL season-opener Friday night.

After Lethbridge netminder Juha Metsola stopped Kootenay's Michael Stickland, who scored four goals in the Ice's season-opening win Thursday night, Ashton scored the lone goal of the shootout, beating Kootenay goalie Nathan Lieuwen for the victory.

Mitch Versteeg, Craig Orfino and Adam Chorneyko scored in regulation for the Hurricanes (1-0-0-0), who squandered a 3-1 second-period lead.

Dominik Pacovsky, Tylan Stephens and Jesse Imond answered for the Ice (1-0-0-1).

Metsola was sensational, stopping 41 shots in regulation and overtime for Lethbridge.

Lieuwen finished with 18 saves for Kootenay.
