Andy Murray hired at Western Michigan University

Former Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues coach Andy Murray was announced Tuesday as the new coach at Western Michigan University.

"We are extremely excited and have a great deal of Bronco pride in announcing Andy Murray as our head coach of our terrific Bronco hockey team," said school director of athletics Kathy Beauregard. "Coach Murray becomes a Bronco after assembling a very extensive and successful body of work as an NHL and international head coach. Consistent with our stated goals of competing at the highest levels of Division I ice hockey and of winning a hockey national championship this decade, Andy's hiring is another clear signal our university is seriously engaged in achieving this coveted pinnacle."

Murray, 60, replaces Jeff Blashill, who left the school July 8 to become an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings.

"I've always had a high level of respect for coaches in the college game and what they do on a daily basis," Murray said. "I look forward to the challenge of coaching some outstanding people. The college game is a great place to be and I have told coaches that for years. I don't know if it gets better at any level. I have had a lot of great opportunities in my coaching career and I am really excited for this one."

Murray last coached in the NHL during the 2009-10 season, his fourth with the Blues. He had guided the Blues to the playoffs in 2009, but was let go midway through the 2009-10 season with the team 17-17-6 through 40 games.

He also coached the Los Angeles Kings from 1999-2006, making the playoffs in his first three seasons, and he's the winningest coach in franchise history, with 215 victories.

In 10 seasons as an NHL coach, Murray is 333-278, with 58 ties and 69 overtime losses.

This isn't the first time Murray has coached in a school atmosphere. The native of Souris, Mb., coached Brandon (Mb.) University for three seasons, and he also spent the 1998-99 season as coach at Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school in Faribault, Minn.
