TBL@WSH: Vasilevskiy slides across to deny Ovechkin

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 54 saves to set a Tampa Bay Lightning record in a 5-4 overtime win against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Wednesday.

The goalie broke his own mark of 48 saves against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 13 and shared by Ben Bishop against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 19, 2014. Vasilevskiy leads the NHL in wins (36-8-4) and is the 11th different goalie since 1955-56 with multiple wins with at least 48 saves in one season. John Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks (Oct. 20 and Nov. 19) and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers (Feb. 28 and March 2) each accomplished the feat last season.
Forward Nikita Kucherov scored two goals and defenseman Victor Hedman scored at 3:01 of overtime after Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov tied the game 4-4 with 52.6 seconds left in the third period to help Tampa Bay (57-13-4) win its sixth consecutive game and become the eighth team in NHL history with at least four separate winning streaks of at least six games in a single season. The 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings, who hold the NHL record for most wins in one season (62-13-7), won at least six in a row six times.
The Lightning's victory was their 26th road win, the most in one season in its history, eclipsing their 25-13-3 mark away from home last season. With six of their eight remaining games away from Amalie Arena, Tampa Bay is six road wins from breaking the NHL record for most in one season set, by the 2005-06 Red Wings (31-7-3).
Lightning coach Jon Cooper won his 300th NHL game (300-156-44). Cooper joined Minnesota Wild coach Bruce Boudreau (301-138-61) as the second NHL coach with at least 300 wins through 500 regular-season games. Boudreau has an NHL coaching record of 537-274-108 in 919 games.
Despite the loss, the Capitals (43-23-8) extended their lead over the New York Islanders (42-24-7) to three points for first place in the Metropolitan Division; the Islanders have a game in hand.
