Andrei Vasilevskiy was thrust into the spotlight Friday when Tampa Bay Lightning starting goalie Ben Bishop was injured in the first period of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Vasilevskiy, 21, entered the game at 12:25 of the first period after Bishop injured his left leg.

Vasilevskiy has started one playoff game, Game 4 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Final against the Chicago Blackhawks. He made 17 saves in a 2-1 loss. Earlier in the series, he replaced Bishop for undisclosed reasons in a 4-3 victory in Game 2; he made five saves in 9:13 of ice time and became the first goaltender in 24 years to win a Final game in relief.

The Lightning selected Vasilevskiy in the first round (No. 19) of the 2012 NHL Draft, which was held at Consol Energy Center, the site of the game Friday. Before entering the League, he helped lead Russia to a bronze medal at the 2011 Under-18 World Championships in Crimmitschau and Dresden, Germany, and a silver medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Calgary and Edmonton.
Vasilevskiy, who took after his father by becoming a goaltender (Andrei Sr. played in the Russian Superleague), has started 34 NHL games and is 18-5-1 with a .913 save percentage and 2.60 goals-against average in 40 career regular-season appearances. He entered Friday 1-1-1 with a .908 save percentage and 2.52 goals-against average in five postseason appearances.
