For Anders Lee, stepping on the gridiron was both a trip down memory lane and a peek at what could have been.
Lee, a former All-State high school quarterback who was recruited to play Division 1 football, got a personal tour of the New York Giants practice facility from defensive end Romeo Okwara last week.

"It was a great time. It was great to meet Romeo. He's such a great kid and I'm happy to see he's doing really well," Lee said. "To come here and see where they put in all of their work is pretty cool and to see it all come together on Sundays is fun to watch. Like anything you get a new perspective anytime you see something new."
Okwara showed Lee around the facility, taking him through the sprawling lockeroom, the weight room and practice field. They also watched film of Lee's days as a quarterback in high school.
Lee racked up 32 rushing touchdowns in his senior year for Edina, but showed off his arm, feeding Okwara spirals on the indoor practice field - a space so big it could double as an airplane hanger.
"It comes back quick," Lee said. "I can't believe they actually pulled up the tape, that's pretty funny. We had a good time and a good laugh about it. It was nice to play a little bit of catch."

Defensive ends and quarterbacks don't usually mix, but Lee and Okwara share a bond, both being Notre Dame alumni. Okwara, a rookie, isn't far removed from his days at school, but they both relish the chance to talk about their time in South Bend. With the cameras off, they talk about people and places, mutual acquaintances and the Irish uniform.
"Even the first time meeting him it feels like we've known each other for a long time," Okwara said. "That's the bond you get with Notre Dame people."
Notre Dame football is obviously a big topic. They both reflect their personal experiences of college football, Okwara running out of the tunnel, Lee sitting first row.
"I love the games, the tradition. I grew up watching Rudy and watching every football game on Saturday," Lee said. "Just the tradition there is something that I've really enjoyed and was a big part of me going to school there was because of the tradition at Notre Dame."

The historic school has a few, from the gold helmets to annual games vs. USC to the fight song. Lee has trouble settling on one.
"It's really a combination of everything," Lee said. "Even the band playing their song and school's fight song. When you hear that, it brings back all those memories of them running on the field and you in the stands. It's pretty cool."
Lee and Romeo are both professional athletes in their respective contact sports, but Lee has an extra appreciation having gone through two-a-days himself. He was also impressed by Okwara sheer size at 6'5, 275 lbs. and athleticism - Okwara rans a 4.9 40-yard dash in his draft year.
"I don't know how the quarterbacks do it having guys like him coming after you," Lee said. but yeah. I feel like a bigger guy in our locker room then I come and meet Romeo and I'm not even close. It's just ridiculous. These guys are such great athletes and it really is you have a lot of respect for these guys."
