Stolarz sets Ducks shutout save record with 46 in win against Sharks

Anthony Stolarz set an Anaheim Ducks record with a 46-save shutout in a 4-0 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center in San Jose on Monday.

Stolarz broke the record of 45, shared by Jonas Hiller in a 3-0 win at the Boston Bruins on Dec. 20, 2010, and Dominic Roussel in a 1-0 win at the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 22, 1998.
The 46 saves are an NHL career high for Stolarz. It was his first shutout since a 1-0 win at the New York Rangers on Jan. 29, 2019, when he played for the Philadelphia Flyers, and third of his NHL career.
"The guys did a great job tonight eliminating second chances, kind of letting me see the first shot," Stolarz said. "If there was a rebound out front, they did a really good job of clearing it."

Alexander Volkov scored two goals, and Max Comtois had a goal and an assist for the Ducks (13-23-7), who won for the second time in seven games.
Martin Jones made 17 saves for the Sharks (18-19-4), who have lost three of four.
"We have to scrap tonight's game and get back at them on Wednesday," San Jose forward Patrick Marleau said. "We don't like the results we're getting, but it starts with us playing our game, and we didn't do that."
Making his third start of the season and 20th over four NHL seasons, Stolarz watched Anaheim build a 3-0 lead in the first period.
"You get a little bit of boost there, it kind of settles you in," Stolarz said. "You kind of don't put too much pressure on yourself."
Comtois scored his Ducks-leading 12th goal off a redirection of Derek Grant's shot for a 1-0 lead at 1:59.
Anaheim defenseman Josh Manson set up the play when he poked the puck off the stick of defenseman Christian Jaros as he tried to bring the puck out of the San Jose zone.
Volkov made it 2-0 at 8:12 when he hit the puck off the blade of Sharks forward Tomas Hertl.
"The first 10 minutes of the game is what cost us," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "Jones was giving us chances to get into the game, but we can't start from a deficit."

Volkov made it 3-0 at 12:19 when he chipped in a pass from Adam Henrique, who had brought the puck behind the San Jose net.
"It's great to get the two goals," said Volkov, who was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 24. "I feel much more comfortable with the team and I'm getting better. That's a good feeling."
Rickard Rakell increased the lead to 4-0 when he scored on a wrist shot from the high slot at 3:26 of the third period.
The Ducks played without forward Ryan Getzlaf, who sat out for the fourth time in five games with an upper-body injury.
Anaheim traded defensemen Ben Hutton and Jani Hakanpää on Monday. To replace them, Jacob Larsson returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch the previous three games, and Andy Welinski played after spending the previous five games on the taxi squad.
"The guys did a great job in front of me and allowed me to see the first shot, just kind of control the rebound, not let anything get out," Stolarz said. "The odd time that there was a rebound, they guys did a really good job of clearing it out and just taking away any second chances they had."
