All-Canada matchup for World Junior A title

by Adam Kimelman
It will be an all-Canada battle for the gold medal at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge, when Canada East faces Canada West for the tournament title.

Both teams won their semifinals Friday, setting up the championship game, which will be played Sunday at 8 p.m. ET (TSN2), at Langley (B.C.) Events Centre.

In one semifinal Friday, Alex Kerfoot's goal 2:09 into overtime gave Canada West a 2-1 victory against Sweden.

Kerfoot broke in on Sweden goalie Oscar Dansk, considered the top goaltending prospect in Europe for the 2012 NHL Draft, and beat him with a shot that bounced off the post and into the net.

Aaron Hadley also scored for Canada West, and goalie Sean Maguire stopped 28 of 29 shots for the victory.

Filip Sandberg's shorthanded goal was all Sweden could manage, and Dank made 20 saves.

In the other semifinal, Canada East snapped Team USA's three-year championship run with a 4-2 victory.

Devin Shore had a pair of goals for Canada East, and Tylor Spink had a goal and an assist.

Ray Pigozzi and Anaheim Ducks 2011 draft pick Andy Welinski had goals for the U.S.

Shore and Patrick Megannety scored to give Canada East a 2-0 lead just 7:41 into the game. Pigozzi scored midway through the first for the U.S., but Spink's goal before the period's end made it 3-1 after one.

After a scoreless second, Welinski scored to make it a one-goal game, but Shore's second goal closed the scoring.

"We never got into a rhythm offensively," U.S. coach Regg Simon said. "Ultimately, we turned too many pucks over and Canada East capitalized on our mistakes."

The victory avenges Canada East's loss in last year's gold-medal game, as well as a 4-1 loss to the U.S. in a pre-tournament exhibition game.

The U.S. will play Sweden in the bronze-medal game, to be played at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
