Kerfoot, Ceci sign with Maple Leafs

Forward, defenseman each was RFA, acquired in separate trades July 1 @NHLdotcom

Alexander Kerfoot and Cody Ceci each signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday after being acquired as a restricted free agent in separate trades Monday.

Kerfoot signed a four-year, $14 million contract. It has an average annual value of $3.5 million. Ceci signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

Kerfoot, a forward who turns 25 on Aug. 11, was traded to Toronto with defenseman Tyson Barrie and a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft for forward Nazem Kadri, defenseman Calle Rosen and a third-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Kerfoot had 42 points (15 goals, 27 assists) in 78 games with the Avalanche last season and had three assists in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Selected by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round (No. 150) of the 2012 NHL Draft, he opted not to sign with them and signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Avalanche on Aug. 23, 2017, after four seasons at Harvard. He had 85 points (34 goals, 51 assists) in 157 games with Colorado and five points (two goals, three assists) in 18 NHL playoff games.

Ceci, a 25-year-old defenseman, was acquired in a trade from the Senators with defenseman Ben Harpur for defenseman Nikita Zaitsev and forward Connor Brown. Ceci had 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists) in 74 games for the Senators last season.

Selected by Ottawa in the first round (No. 15) of the 2012 NHL Draft, he had 118 points (32 goals, 86 assists) in 440 games for Ottawa and three assists in 25 NHL playoff games.

Toronto also received forward prospect Aaron Luchuk and a third-round pick in the 2020 draft in the trade. Ottawa also acquired the rights to restricted free agent forward Michael Carcone, who has played three seasons in the American Hockey League.
