Akeson opens season with hat trick as Rangers down Frontenacs 6-5

KITCHENER, Ont. - Jason Akeson scored twice in the third period to lift the Kitchener Rangers over the Kingston Frontenacs 6-5 in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night.

Akeson also scored midway through the second period to start his season with a hat trick. The 19-year-old from Orleans, Ont., scored 20 goals and 64 points with Kitchener last season.

Jeff Skinner had two goals and an assist for the Rangers (1-0-0), while Jeremy Morin added a goal and an assist. Chris MacKinnon, Kitchener's leading scorer last season with 85 points, had four assists.

Zach Hamden and Ethan Werek each had a goal and an assist for Kingston (1-1-0). Brian Lashoff, Jaroslav Kruzik and rookie Alan Quine also scored.

Brandon Maxwell made 28 saves for the Rangers, while Frontenacs netminder Tyler Beskorowany stopped 28 shots.
