After scoring first goal of season, Thrashers star Ilya Kovalchuk goes out with injury @NHLdotcom

ATLANTA (AP) -Thrashers star Ilya Kovalchuk headed to the locker room after apparently injuring his shoulder during Wednesday's game against the Ottawa Senators.

The 24-year-old Kovalchuk had just stepped over a sliding Ottawa player to get off a shot when he was struck in the right arm by Mike Fisher with 9:10 left in the first period.

Kovalchuk went down in the corner, then skated off in obvious pain, bent over and holding his arm as if to relieve pressure on his shoulder. He went straight to the locker room for treatment.

There was no immediate word on Kovalchuk's status. He scored unassisted 7 minutes into the game, his first goal of the season, to tie the score at 1.

The top overall pick in 2001, Kovalchuk has scored at least 40 goals the last three seasons, including a career-best 52 in 2005-06.
