McDavid's two-goal night

EDM@BUF: McDavid nets a pair against the Sabres

3/1/16: Connor McDavid shows off in Buffalo, scoring 22 seconds into the game and tallying again in OT to lift the Oilers to a win

Down the ice went Buffalo Sabres rookie Jack Eichel, skating with the puck on his stick, weaving and spinning and unleashing a backhanded shot that to the naked eye missed the net by maybe a foot, maybe less, but just enough to eventually spring you know who the other way.

Connor McDavid got the puck off of Eichel's miss on the right-wing half wall and went and won the game for the Edmonton Oilers. He used his tantalizing speed to get down the ice in a hurry and a power move to the net that led to a perfect backhanded five-hole shot to give the Oilers a 2-1 win, capping the first chapter in what certainly looks like a rivalry in the making.

Situation Room: Sekera's goal waived off

3/1/16: Andrej Sekera's buzzer-beating goal is negated following a successful offside challenge from Dan Bylsma late in the 2nd

  • 03:48 •

At 19:59 of the second period in the Oilers/Sabres game, Buffalo requested a Coach's Challenge to review whether Edmonton was off-side prior to their goal.

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Linesman determined that Edmonton's Anton Lander was off-side prior to the goal. According to Rule 78.7, "The standard for overturning the call in the event of a 'GOAL' call on the ice is that the Linesman, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that one or more Players on the attacking team preceded the puck into the attacking zone prior to the goal being scored and that, as a result, the play should have been stopped for an "Off-side" infraction; where this standard is met, the goal will be disallowed."

McDavid's family, friends add to facing Eichel

Top picks in 2015 Draft play for first time when Oilers visit Sabres

by Derek Van Diest / NHL.com Correspondent

EDMONTON -- Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid is looking forward to facing the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; SNW, MSG-B, NHL.TV), but not necessarily because he will play against forward Jack Eichel for the first time.

McDavid, the No. 1 selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, missed the first game against Eichel, the No. 2 pick, on Dec. 6 at Rexall Place, because of a fractured clavicle.
