The Montreal Canadiens finished last in the NHL standings last season, but a glimpse of a better future will be on display during the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championships.

The Canadiens will have six prospects playing in the tournament, the most among NHL teams.
"It's exciting for the organization and obviously for the fans in Montreal," Canadiens director of player development Rob Ramage said. "They're getting a taste of it now with the guys that are with the [Canadiens], but now they get a better preview on a pretty big stage of what's to come."
Topping that list is Slovakia forward Filip Mesar, the No. 26 pick of the 2022 NHL Draft.
The 18-year-old forward was one of the final cuts during training camp, and after spending time with Laval of the American Hockey League to start the season, Mesar has 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 17 games with Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League.
"He had a really good (Canadiens) rookie tournament," Ramage said. "He stood out, he played like a pro, his habits were really, really good. ... It's just the details [in his game]. You see this guy is very responsible for a young guy."
Forward Joshua Roy could be a key player for Canada. Chosen by the Canadiens in the fifth round (No. 150) of the 2021 NHL Draft, he led the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 119 points (51 goals, 68 assists) in 66 games last season with Sherbrooke, and this season he's fifth with an average of 1.65 points per game (43 points in 26 games). He also had eight points (three goals, five assists) in seven games to help Canada win the 2022 WJC in August while playing in a more defensive role.
"They moved Joshua to a line on the Canadian team in the summer where he was matched up against the best lines of the opposition, so he got put in to almost more of a checking role," Ramage said. "For a guy with his offensive pedigree, it was wonderful for his development. I love that. Learned a little bit about the other side of the play, and he raised it. (Canada coach) Dave (Cameron) said he was great. Just took on the challenge and it was really good for him."
Other Canadiens prospects playing in the tournament are forwards Vinzenz Rohrer (Austria) and Oliver Kapanen (Finland), and defensemen Lane Hutson (United States) and Adam Engstrom (Sweden).
The Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers each will have five prospects playing in the tournament. Thirty of the 32 teams will have at least one prospect in the WJC; the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs do not have a prospect in the tournament.
The 2023 WJC will be held Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick. All games will be televised on NHL Network in the United States and TSN in Canada.
