DENVER -- Matt Duchene and Nathan MacKinnon scored in the shootout to support goalie Calvin Pickard, and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 at Pepsi Center on Wednesday. 

Pickard made 30 saves through overtime before denying Sharks forwards Joonas Donskoi and Joe Pavelski in the shootout.

Nick Spaling of the San Jose Sharks and Shawn Matthias of the Colorado Avalanche each scored in the first period of his first game with his new team at Pepsi Center on Wednesday. 

Spaling, traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, scored at 2:10 to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.

Polak, Spaling to make Sharks debut

Set to face former teammate Matthias, Avalanche

DENVER -- When forward Shawn Matthias makes his Colorado Avalanche debut Wednesday against the San Jose Sharks at Pepsi Center, he'll be facing two players -- defenseman Roman Polak and forward Nick Spaling -- who were teammates of his four days ago.

The Avalanche acquired Matthias from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday for minor-league center Colin Smith and a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
