TORONTO -- Derek Stepan scored the go-ahead goal with 1:31 remaining in the third period, and the New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 at Air Canada Centre on Thursday. 

Stepan beat Toronto goaltender Jonathan Bernier with a wrist shot from the slot for his 13th goal of the season. It came 59 seconds after Toronto's Colin Greening scored off a scramble to tie the game 2-2.

New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh did not start the second period against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. 

McDonagh was injured with 1:02 left in the first period when he was elbowed in the head by Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov.

According to Rule 49.2 "A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player's skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal." Good goal Toronto.
