The Maple Leafs and Bruins were tied after 40 minutes and after the Bruins took the lead for the third time in the game, Luca Caputi scored his first as a Maple Leaf to level things again.
Nothing could be solved the rest of the period and in overtime it appeared that for the second time in six days the two teams would be headed to a shootout. But Nikolai Kulemin scored his 13th of the year as the Leafs won their first game in overtime this season.
Hits for the Leafs against the Bruins. Dion Phaneuf led the way with six.
Leafs could win only 21 of the 54 draws on the night.
Carl Gunnarsson continues to have an impressive rookie season. There weren't many expectations coming in but he has been one of Ron Wilson's favourite defencemen.
For the second time in three games he was a plus three. He's a plus nine on the year (team high). He scored his second career goal on a nice slap shot. Gunnarsson doesn't mind taking the body including a big hit late in the third period that woke the crowd up.
Viktor Stalberg had one his best games an NHLer Tuesday night. Stalberg is blessed with remarkable speed and after a slow first period for him and the team, he started to skate in the second and it caused numerous chances.
Stalberg didn't score but on Luca Caputi's tying goal, it was Stalberg who made the rush and flipped the puck to the net. Stalberg finished the night with four hits and three shots in 15:52 of ice-time.
Since the Olympic break, although the Maple Leafs have been able to pick up only five of a possible ten points the team has been playing a much more aggressive game. They have also used their speed more effectively and that is something Ron Wilson wants to see from his team.
If the Leafs want to climb out of their current position in the standings they have a great opportunity this week facing Tampa Bay, Edmonton and the Islanders.
Luca Caputi on the Leafs intending to make things difficult for teams:
"That’s what Mr. Burke said since the trade deadline – we want to have an impact on the playoff picture even if we’re quite a ways out of it. We want to make it hard on teams and any way we can we want to win. It’s a good atmosphere to be around right now. It’s fun when you’re playing hockey and winning games."
Thursday March 11 vs. Tampa Bay 7 PM ET (Leafs TV, AM640)
Game Notes: The Maple Leafs' homestand continues as they host the Tampa Bay Lightning who are looking to close in on an Eastern Conference playoff spot.
Tampa boasts one of the best young players in the NHL today in Steven Stamkos. The sophomore forward ranks among the NHL leaders with 41 goals this season.
