Winnik To Sit Out Tonight

by David Alter / Toronto Maple Leafs

Jonathan Bernier gets the nod in goal tonight as the Maple Leafs host the New York Rangers tonight at Air Canada Centre. Cam Talbot will counter in goal for the Rangers.

Talbot has started in one game agains Toronto in his career, grabbing a win in a 2-1 shootout victory.

Daniel Winnik will be out of the lineup tonight. Winnik suffered a horrific fall early on Thursday’s 4-3 shoutout loss to Colorado.

“There’s a protocol that has to be followed and he will not be available to our hockey club”, said Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle.

Winnik appeared to have been out cold. But Carlyle stopped short of confirming that Winnik suffered any form of concussion or concussion-like symptoms.

Despite missing today’s morning skate, Phil Kessel will play tonight. Kessel has not missed a game for Toronto since he made his Leafs debut back in November of 2009.

After he was a surprise scratch on Thursday, Morgan Rielly could make his return.

“That’s’s what happens sometimes,” Rielly said. “We’ve got a lot of good D here, that's going to happen the odd time and you just have to handle it.”

Jake Gardiner is a warmup decision after he left Thursday’s game early, when he took a puck to the knee.

Should Gardiner get the ok, it’s likely Stuart Percy will be scratched.

Josh Leivo is expected to make his season debut after being called up to take Winnik’s spot.
