Welcoming Back Nieuwendyk

by Joe Bowen / Toronto Maple Leafs

As suggested on this blog a few weeks ago the Maple Leafs and Cliff Fletcher have augmented their growing hockey front office by bringing aboard Joe Nieuwendyk.

The former Cornell star who was drafted by Fletcher while running the Calgary Flames, is one of the great team players the game has ever seen. Much has been made of the leadership skills of Mark Messier but those of the Whitby native are second to none.

Nieuwendyk was always a huge force in any dressing room he participated in. Three Stanley Cups with three different organizations are a testament to this. Returning home after a brief stint with the Florida Panthers front office will bring about dramatic results for the Leafs.

Do not be surprised if in the not too distant future Joe Nieuwendyk  is running an NHL team as the general manager and it just might be right here in Toronto.
