Veterans Honoured In Toronto

by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs

Veterans Recognized
With Remembrance Day on Friday, the Maple Leafs honoured some war veterans last night. The Leafs welcomed veterans who served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War, as well as two Canadian Peacekeepers. 2005 is the Year of the Veteran. One of the honourees included 105 year-old World War I veteran Lloyd Clemette.
"It was awesome," Pat Quinn said about honouring the veterans. "This time of year you're mindful of brothers and sisters who have served and lucky for us we haven't but it's a great time of year."

Molson Cup
Every month the Maple Leafs salute the Molson Cup Winner for most three star appearances. The winner for October was Eric Lindros. He had eight goals and 12 points in October and picked up 12 Molson Cup points (one first star selection).

Colaiacovo Recalled
Earlier in the day the Maple Leafs called up defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo from the Toronto Marlies due to Aki Berg's knee injury. Colaiacovo played in his second game of the 2005-06 season and he logged 11:45 of ice time. Pat Quinn teamed Staffan Kronwall and Colaiacovo and his two young defencemen rewarded him with excellent play at both ends of the rink. Colaiacovo scored his first NHL goal in the third to ice the game.

Quinn was very pleased with his young defenceman
"He seemed comfortable," Quinn said. "He did a nice job tonight."

"Poni (Alexei Ponikarovsky) grabbed the puck," Colaiacovo said. "I realized in the huddle that I scored when he told me he didn't score and I asked him to get the puck. It's one of those funny ones to remember but the biggest thing is battling back to get the win."

Sundin and O'Neill On Fire
Mats Sundin has been red hot since coming back from his left eye injury. Sundin had an assist on Alexei Ponikarovsky's third period goal and had the game-winning goal when he scored on a wraparound. He now has six points in three games. O'Neill has certainly enjoyed having Sundin back. O'Neill has seven points in three games after having a goal and two assists Tuesday night.

Penalty Fest
There were 17 penalties on the night. The Leafs were 2 for 10 on the power play while the Capitals were 1 for 7. Twenty-six of the Maple Leafs 60 goals this season have come on the power play.

Third Period Monsters
The Maple Leafs scored four third period goals which gives them 26 in the third period this season.
