LEAFS SCORE GAME'S FIRST TWO GOALS, ALLOW THREE BEFORE END OF SECOND
Neither the Maple Leafs nor the visiting Colorado Avalanche scored in the first period Monday, but the middle frame featured five goals scored - three of them by the Avs.
The first two, however, were scored by the Leafs. The opening goal of the night was netted by blueliner Igor Ozhiganov, who snapped a shot through traffic and past goaltender Semyon Varlamo at 2:14 of the second:

The Leafs brought the fans to their feet at the 6:00 mark of the third, when defenceman Travis Dermott made a slick stretch pass to winger Mitch Marner, who took the puck in along the boards and then toward Varlamov before firing a wrist shot past him for Marner's .

Unlike the Leafs poor showing in the shots-on-net department - including being outshot 18-7 in the second - Toronto held Colorado to only 7 shots in the third. However, one of those shots came from Soderberg, who scored his second of the night to make it 4-3 in the Avs' favour; and another one of Soderbergh's shots went into an empty net for the final goal of the night (Matt Calvert had the first empty-netter at 17:09) to lock up the Avalanche's win.
The Leafs, meanwhile, registered only 20 shots on net in the game, and now have dropped two games in a row. Their next two games come in Florida, with matches against the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday and the Florida Panthers Friday. Leafs head coach Mike Babcock will demand a much more robust work effort from his team, and rightfully so. If they can't amp up their compete-level, the Bolts and Panthers could quickly hurt, and defeat them.
