Ryan Strome’s stock soared in the second half of the season as he rose from 19th to eighth and some of that has to be traced back to his beginnings with the sport.

Strome, a Mississauga native and lifelong Maple Leafs fan is one of the rare prospects who spent his early years sharpening his game out of doors.

“I took power skating later in my career but my dad and grandfather put me on skates by the time I was two. I think I could skate better than I could walk.

“I remember going to city hall before it even opened so we could use our sticks and puck before the public skating began.  We would go there before we went to my regular practice so we could work on some things. That’s how I grew to be a player."

Speaking of growing, Strome would like to add some size to his skill package.

“It will come. I’m six foot one right now so I’m not really too worried about it. A couple of inches wouldn’t hurt but my dad is six four and my mom is five 11. "

Strome was voted most improved player and best playmaker in the OHL Eastern Conference Coaches Poll.
