(April 24, 2006) -- Everyone affiliated with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Steve Stavro. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Sally, his entire family, and to others who share our good fortune to be among his long list of friends.
Mr. Stavro served with great passion and dedication as Chairman of the Board for our organization from its founding in 1998 until stepping down in 2003. His legacy in the field of sports-especially soccer, hockey, horse racing, and basketball-has been unparalleled in Toronto during the past 40 years. Having begun his association with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1981, Mr. Stavro's love for the hockey club was particularly evident. However, it was also his involvement in youth hockey and in soccer, which began in the 1960's, that made such an indelible mark on the young people of our community.
Mr. Stavro embodied the Canadian story, immigrating to Canada at the age of seven and working his way up to where he became a pioneer in the retail grocery industry. His was a story of self-made success, of hard work, of love for family, friends and his new country. While Mr. Stavro was highly-regarded in industry and in sports, he was most proud to be a great Canadian.
Mr. Stavro will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Those in our organization feel blessed to have been among those so privileged.
