Stajan Joins Other Oddly Injured Athletes

by Mike Ulmer / Toronto Maple Leafs
When he was knocked out of the lineup by a wayward soccer ball, Leafs centre Matt Stajan joined a long list of athletes scratched from the lineup because of bizarre injuries.

They include the following players:

-Joe Sakic suffered extensive injuries to his hand after deciding, for whatever reason, to stick it in the auger of a snowblower. “He was very upset with himself” said Avalanche VP Jean Martineau.

-New York Giants star receiver Plaxico Burress is out of the Giants lineup for the very sound reason that he accidentally shot himself in the leg with his own gun.

-Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz missed a start when he burned his chest while - wait for it - ironing his shirt. Yes, he was wearing it at the time.

-Former Detroit Tiger star Lou Whitaker injured his knee while doing splits at a wedding party.

-As a Chicago Cub, Sammy Sosa sneezed so violently, he gave himself back spasms.
