(Feb. 6, 2004) -- Maple Leafs rookie centre Matt Stajan has been selected to play in Saturday's YoungStars game during the NHL's All-star weekend in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Stajan, 20, currently ranks ninth (tie) among NHL rookies in goal scoring after recording his eighth goal of the season last night in Ottawa. He is also 14th (tie) among rookies in points with 17 and is 15th (tie) in assists with nine.
The Mississauga native was drafted by the Maple Leafs with their second pick, 57th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed to a multi-year deal April 3, 2003 and scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game last season, April 5, versus the Ottawa Senators.
The Maple Leafs also announced that goaltender Mikael Tellqvist has been re-assigned the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs. Tellqvist was recalled February 3 but saw no action. Tellqvist has appeared in five games for Toronto this season and has a record of 2-0-2 with a 2.51 goals against average.
