Righting the Ship for the Regular Season

by Joe Bowen / Toronto Maple Leafs
Well the last time I checked the Leafs are still in first place.

Ok, Ok, Ok. Last night was an embarrassment and loosing 7-2 to the Buffalo Sabres is never very much fun, but remember it still is pre-season and the games do not count in the standings.

Yes that is the good news, now for the urgent news.  This team has got to start playing better.

Starting in goal and moving right on out.  Vesa Toskala was out of position a lot last night, overplaying the puck.  The Leafs defensive Zone coverage was standing around and the forwards didn’t score.

Oh did I say it was the centre piece of an eight-game pre-season schedule.  Yes I did.

The players know it the coaches are fuming about it and now with two games to go against Detroit the final decisions will be made.

The Leafs play 10 of their first 14 games on home ice. They have to get off to a better start on home ice than they did last year.

Winning their last nine at Air Canada Centre should be a benchmark to shoot for but the two games in the pre-season at ACC have not gone a long way to giving the folks in Leafs Nation much to talk about.

We’ll look for a better result Friday.
