Here's a sampling of what the Maple Leafs and Sabres had to say following Toronto's 4-3 shootout loss on Monday.
This was a game we were in total control of. I thought we had the puck more. I thought we did more good things, and we still found a way not to get the points we wanted so that part’s disappointing.
Zach Hyman on his first NHL goal
It was awesome. It’s tough that we lost but to get my first goal was pretty special. Smith made a great play to Grabner and we kind of just stayed on the puck, and Grabby got the puck on the net and I just found the puck at the net and got my own rebound and fell on a stick. I don’t really know what was going through my head. I was just ecstatic.
We play well throughout the majority of the game but we have little lapses and allow them to get back in the game and we can’t seem to recover after. A shootout loss you can’t get too low, when you win them you can’t get too high.
Buffalo Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma
I think we got a bit fortunate. I didn’t see the play down to the left that ended up resulting in Jack’s (Eichel) goal. Jack’s coming out of the box there, and we get a puck out to Matt Moulson. He makes a nice play to Jack for that goal to get us back within one, and I think we were the fortunate benefactor of a turnover there to get the third goal. Sam (Reinhart) makes a nice play after he gets the puck but that’s fortunate for us and allows us to get back and strike with two goals in the third period. We had chances there with the power play in the overtime to win it. Hit the post, Jack does, but fortunately we get in the positive side of a shootout.
Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel
Every game’s not going to be pretty. I think as a line, it’s not the start we wanted at all. We gave up that goal on the first shift and then I turn a puck over on the second shift and Johnny (Johnson) bails me out so I owe him on that one. It says a lot about our team that we stuck with it for 60 minutes. You’re down two goals going into the third period. You get one back in the second, you’re able to break the goalie and then they’re able to get one and regain that two goal lead. It’s really big for us to be resilient in that third and play a simple game, be able to get two goals and force overtime and a shootout and see what happens. It’s nice to win a shootout.
