Here's a sample of what the Maple Leafs and Sabres had to say following a 4-1 Toronto win on Saturday night.
You want guys playing with energy, you want guys playing with confidence and making plays and trying to do things. It’s fun to be a part of when other guys are doing that. It’s kind like of a silent vote of confidence for every other guy when you see a young guy carrying his weight in the game. You kind of think, ‘hey, I’ve got to pick it up, I’ve got no excuse’ so it’s fun to be a part of.
I think it’s coming every day. You start to find certain areas of the ice where you can make certain plays. It’s coming and it’s getting there.
I thought our kids were good tonight. I thought Gauther’s line was real good. I thought, everybody, we were fine. We played well.
Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma
We didn’t have a lot of compete. We didn’t have a lot of battle level in this game. We fortunately got the first goal in the game, had the lead, but I didn’t think we had the play. They carried the play. They came at us with speed pretty much throughout the game.
Sabres goaltender Chad Johnson
We just didn’t have that jump that we needed to compete and be in the game. They came out really strong and they’re a fast team and we were sort of on our heels most of the game. We just didn’t have that energy that we needed.
Sabres forward Brian Gionta
We just couldn’t really create anything. We weren’t very good with our execution. We didn’t complete many passes, turned it over. They’re a team that thrives on the rush, using their transition, using their speed. They’ve got a lot of speed, ‘D’ that join, and all of that stuff got us in trouble tonight.
