Notes and Quotes: December 12, 2014

by Chris Lund / Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs held a spirited practice on Friday ahead of the upcoming weekend's doubleheader against the Red Wings and Kings. Here's a sampling of what they had to say after the skate...

James van Riemsdyk on finding ways to win:

There's lots of different recipes to win. It's not just a black and white game where you outshoot the other team and automatically win. That's not how this game works. There are many other factors - goaltending, goal scoring, power play, penalty kill - different things where you've got to find a way to win games. You may not be playing your best game and get a jumpstart on the power play or whatever it may be and you give yourself a chance. There are lots of different ways to skin a cat in that regard.

Richard Panik on playing his 100th NHL game:

Those games just fly by, I'm really happy to get 100. It wasn't easy to get 100 but I'm glad for the opportunity and hopefully I'll get another... I'm just trying my best to help the team win the game. So far it's working, I think it could be better but I'm just focused on the next game and working hard in practices to show the coach I've got more in me. I have to keep going and hopefully good things are going to happen.

Carter Ashton on returning to the Leafs:

It's exciting to be back with the team. I worked hard, stayed sharp, stayed in shape and it's nice to be back with the guys... It was difficult. Obviously I couldn't be with the team so I was back home in Saskatoon skating with the junior team and by myself just to stay sharp and stay in shape. I've been back for about a week now, I worked hard back home and it's exciting to be back with the guys.

Randy Carlyle on Roman Polak returning to the ice:

Obviously he's testing it by himself here this morning. He spent 15 to 20 minutes on the ice by himself so that's the first step of a long process here. We'll see how his knee reacts from that and we'll go forward. It'll be up to him and the medical staff to see how much farther we can push him along the way.
