This press release was issued by the NHL:

NEW YORK (September 25, 2001) -- Toronto Maple Leafs forward Gary Roberts has been suspended automatically for three preseason games as the result of being assessed a Game Misconduct under Rule 76(a) Category III - Physical Abuse of Officials - during a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators September 23.

Roberts was assessed the penalty for applying physical force to linesman Scott Driscoll during an attempt to continue an altercation with Ottawa's Chris Neil at the conclusion of the contest. Violations of Category III criteria incur an automatic three-game suspension.

Roberts, who also has been fined $1,000, the maximum allowed under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, will miss the preseason game against Detroit September 26 plus two against Buffalo September 27 and 29.
