TORONTO - It looks as though Alexander Mogilny won't miss as much time as originally expected after he re-injured his back.
Mogilny wasn't with his team Wednesday night in Atlanta after being thrown into the boards by defenceman Brad Stuart, in the first period of Tuesday's 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks.
The Russian winger has been examined by team doctors, who found no structural damage to his tender lower back. He is in pain and the back has been spasming but that was to be expected. Mogilny missed three games earlier this month because of back spasms.
With the Leafs off until next Tuesday, when the Minnesota Wild arrive at Air Canada Centre, there is hope Mogilny could play if everything goes perfectly. If he does happen to be out an extended period of time it isn't of much consequence because the Leafs play just five games between now and the March 1 due to the All-Star and Olympic breaks.
Mogilny is second on the team with 43 points and has scored 11 points in his last nine games.
