by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs

(July 17, 2006) -- John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the club has signed restricted free agent defencemen Brendan Bell and Jay Harrison to one year contracts. He also announced that defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo and forward Kris Newbury have accepted the club's qualifying offer for the 2006-07 season. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Colaiacovo was Toronto's first pick, 17th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Bell and Harrison were Toronto's third and fourth picks that same year going 65th and 82nd overall. Newbury signed with Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent on October 2, 2003 and was originally San Jose's fourth pick, 139th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
