Maple Leafs recall Ponikarovsky

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday that Alexei Ponikarovsky has been recalled from the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League and will join the team in Pittsburgh.

In 72 games with St. John's this season, the left-winger recorded 21 goals and 27 assists to go along with 74 penalty minutes and a plus-minus mark of plus four.

The native of Kiev, Ukraine scored a shorthanded goal (Game #1) and an empty-net goal (Game #2) in the St. John's Maple Leafs' two-game AHL playoff series sweep of the Providence Bruins this week.

He was with Toronto from January 6 to January 20, 2002 and he scored once in six games, versus Atlanta on January 15. He played for Ukaine at the 2002 Winter Olympics and recorded a goal and an assist in four games with six minutes in penalties.

Ponikarovsky, 22, was Toronto's fourth choice, 87th overall, in the 1998 Entry Draft.
